GATHERING SONG: ELW 765

Lord of All Hopefulness

Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy,

whose trust, ever child-like, no cares could destroy:

be there at our waking, and give us, we pray,

your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day.

Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith,

whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe:

be there at our labors, and give us, we pray,

your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day.

Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace,

your hands swift to welcome, your arms to embrace:

be there at our homing, and give us, we pray,

your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day.

Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm,

whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm:

be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray,

your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day.

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

KYRIE ELESION (P 184)

GREETING

PRAYER OF THE DAY

PSALM 13 (Tone 5)

JOB 31:35-37; 38:1-11 [25-27]

35“Oh, that I had one to hear me! (Here is my signature! let the Almighty answer me!) Oh, that I had the indictment written by my adversary! 36Surely I would carry it on my shoulder; I would bind it on me like a crown; 37I would give him an account of all my steps; like a prince I would approach him.”

38

Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind: 2“Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? 3Gird up your loins like a man, I will question you, and you shall declare to me.

4“Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. 5Who determined its measurements—surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? 6On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone 7when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy? 8“Or who shut in the sea with doors when it burst out from the womb?— 9when I made the clouds its garment, and thick darkness its swaddling band, 10and prescribed bounds for it, and set bars and doors, 11and said, ‘Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stopped’?”

[25“Who has cut a channel for the torrents of rain, and a way for the thunderbolt, 26to bring rain on a land where no one lives, on the desert, which is empty of human life, 27to satisfy the waste and desolate land, and to make the ground put forth grass?”]

KIDS MESSAGE SONG

Ancient Words

Holy words long preserved

for our walk in this world;

They resound with God's own heart,

O, let the ancient words impart;

Words of life, words of hope,

give us strength, help us cope;

In this world where'er we roam,

Ancient words will guide us home.

Refrain: Ancient words, ever true,

Changing me, changing you;

We have come with open hearts,

O let the ancient words impart.

Holy words of our faith

handed down to this age,

Came to us through sacrifice;

O, heed the faithful words of Christ;

Holy words long preserved

for our walk in this world;

They resound with God's own heart;

O, let the ancient words impart. REFRAIN 2x

MESSAGE

SONG OF THE DAY: ELW 881

Let All Things Now Living

Let all things now living

a song of thanksgiving

to God the creator triumphantly raise,

who fashioned and made us,

protected and stayed us,

who still guides us on to the end of our days.

God's banners are o'er us,

God's light goes before us,

a pillar of fire shining forth in the night,

till shadows have vanished

and darkness is banished,

as forward we travel from light into light.

God rules all the forces:

the stars in their courses

and sun in its orbit obediently shine;

the hills and the mountains,

the rivers and fountains,

the deeps of the ocean proclaim God divine.

We too should be voicing

our love and rejoicing;

with glad adoration a song let us raise

till all things now living

unite in thanksgiving:

"To God in the highest, hosanna and praise!"

Text: Katherine K. Davis, 1892-1980, alt.

INVITATION TO COMMUNION

COMMUNION HYMN:

Remembrance

Oh, how could it be

That my God would welcome me

into this mystery

Take this bread, take this wine

Now the simple made divine

for any to receive

By Your mercy, we come to Your table

By Your grace, You are making us faithful

Lord, we remember You

And remembrance leads us to worship

And as we worship You

Our worship leads to communion

We respond to Your invitation,

we remember You

See His body, see His blood

Know that He has overcome

every trial we will face

None too lost to be saved

None too broken or ashamed,

all are welcome in this place

By Your mercy, we come to Your table

By Your grace, You are making us faithful

Lord, we remember You

And remembrance leads us to worship

And as we worship You

Our worship leads to communion

We respond to Your invitation,

we remember You

Dying You destroyed our death

Rising You restored our life

Lord Jesus, come in glory,

Lord Jesus, come in glory,

Dying You destroyed our death

Rising You restored our life

Lord Jesus, come in glory,

Lord Jesus, come in glory,

Lord Jesus, come in glory,

Lord Jesus, come in glory

Lord, we remember You

And remembrance leads us to worship

And as we worship You

Our worship leads to communion

We respond to Your invitation

We respond to Your invitation,

we remember You

SENDING SONG:

Trading My Sorrows

I’m trading my sorrows,

I’m trading my shame,

I’m laying them down For the joy of the Lord.

I’m trading my burdens,

I’m trading my pain,

I’m laying them down For the joy of the Lord.

Yes, Lord, yes, Lord, yes, yes, Lord;

Yes, Lord, yes, Lord, yes, yes, Lord;

I’m laying them down For the joy of the Lord.

I am pressed but not crushed,

Persecuted, not abandoned,

Struck down, but not destroyed;

I am blessed beyond belief

For His promise will endure,

That His joy’s gonna be my strength.

Though the sorrow may last for the night,

His joy comes with the morning.

I’m trading my sorrows,

I’m trading my shame,

I’m laying them down For the joy of the Lord.

I’m trading my burdens,

I’m trading my pain,

I’m laying them down For the joy of the Lord.

Yes, Lord, yes, Lord, yes, yes, Lord;

Yes, Lord, yes, Lord, yes, yes, Lord;

I’m laying them down For the joy of the Lord.
